GDS were proud to have contributed to the successful delivery of the JP2060 Phase 3 Deployable Health Capability in partnership with Saab Australia and more than 100 suppliers. 

The Australian Defence Force has taken delivery of a new generation of rapidly deployable military hospitals, providing a significant boost to its ability to sustain operations, respond to humanitarian crises and deliver advanced medical care wherever Australian forces are deployed.

Saab Australia has formally delivered the Australian Defence Force’s new Joint Project 2060 Phase 3 (JP2060-3) Deployable Health Capability, completing one of the most significant modernisations of Australia’s military medical support system in recent years.

As the prime systems integrator, Saab worked alongside a network of strategic partners and more than 100 Australian suppliers to integrate thousands of individual components into more than 550 deployable medical modules capable of supporting operations ranging from disaster relief to high-intensity conflict.The modular system provides a scalable healthcare capability that can be rapidly configured to meet operational requirements, delivering everything from primary healthcare and emergency treatment through to surgery, advanced diagnostic imaging, intensive care and trauma management.Beyond improving the survivability of wounded personnel, the capability significantly enhances the Australian Defence Force’s ability to sustain expeditionary operations across the Indo-Pacific, where long distances and austere operating environments place a premium on deployable medical support.

Central to the new capability is Saab’s purpose-built Deployable Health Capability Support Centre at Bundamba in Queensland. Fully integrated into Defence’s logistics network, the facility is responsible for the storage, maintenance, preparation and rapid deployment of the medical modules, ensuring they remain ready for immediate operational use.

The project has also included comprehensive training for Australian Defence Force personnel to ensure the capability can be rapidly deployed and integrated into operational environments.

Saab Australia Managing Director Andy Keough CSC said the successful delivery reflected the close partnership between Defence and Australian industry, “The successful delivery of JP2060-3 has been achieved with close collaboration between our strategic partners and more than 100 local suppliers. Their critical contribution has been a fundamental input into the capability and has enabled this high-quality capability outcome,” Mr Keough said.

While combat platforms often attract the greatest attention, deployable health systems are increasingly recognised as a critical element of military capability. Modern expeditionary forces depend on sophisticated medical support to sustain operations over extended distances, improve casualty survival rates and maintain operational tempo during both combat and humanitarian missions.

The delivery also highlights the growing maturity of Australia’s sovereign defence industrial base. As the prime systems integrator, Saab brought together technologies and equipment from a diverse network of Australian suppliers, demonstrating the capability of local industry to deliver complex, mission-critical systems.

Mr Keogh added, “The deployable health capability provided under JP2060-3 equips the ADF with an agile and modern solution that delivers high quality healthcare wherever it is required, supporting forces within Australia and overseas.”

With the Australian Defence Force placing greater emphasis on operating across the vast Indo-Pacific under the 2026 National Defence Strategy, the new deployable hospitals provide an essential enabling capability.
