Saab Australia has today launched its global Deployable Health Capability Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Melbourne – creating sovereign capability and unlocking export opportunities for local industry.

Saab Australia Managing Director, Andy Keough, said that establishment of the CoE further cements Saab’s commitment to Australia and will underpin the pursuit of international deployable health solution opportunities.

“Saab globally has been delivering expert deployable health capability for over 30 years. With the capability technology transfer from Europe to Australia, the CoE will bring together the best of industry partnerships to ensure export of world leading capability out of Australia, to the world.

“Saab’s increased local development of deployable health solutions, in addition to the establishment of the CoE is a testament to our growing capability. This coupled with our local supplier engagement to foster innovation and product development, will further increase sovereign industry capability and supply chain resilience.

Saab’s Centre of Excellence in Australia will house Saab experts across Bio-Medical Engineering, Major Infrastructure, Product Development and Marketing as well as Integrated Logistic Support and Training Teams. The composition of this highly skilled team, combined with industry and academia partnerships, will allow the development and export of world class deployable health solutions to military and humanitarian operations internationally.

In addition to the launch of Saab’s global CoE, Saab today signed two major contracts with Aspen Medical and Global Defence Solutions (GDS), in support of its delivery of JP2060 Phase 3, the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) deployable health capability project.

Saab and Aspen Medical have signed a $6.7m contract for the delivery of clinical and operational medical training.

Aspen Medical General Manager – Asia Pacific, Mick Humphries, said that as a veteran owned company, Aspen Medical are proud to be working with a consortium of best-in-class suppliers led by Saab to provide the ADF’s future deployable health capability.

“Aspen Medical will use its vast experience in delivery of healthcare globally to provide training across a wide range of improved and new health technologies. We look forward to the challenge of helping prepare the Australian Defence Force for its future missions.”

Signing a contract for $38.4m, Global Defence Solutions (GDS) will deliver Saab the deployable infrastructure aspects of JP2060 Phase 3 consisting of hard and soft shelters – a strategic partnership creating superior solutions.

GDS Chairman, Laurie Koster, said that as an Australian SME leading the way in Deployable Force Infrastructure, GDS are delighted to be able to offer a comprehensive soft and hard shelter solution which will equip Australian troops with the best quality capability – whilst growing its Australian operations.

“Off the back of our JP2060 contract with Saab, GDS has doubled its local workforce and we look forward to continuing to grow as we further develop our relationship.

Formally executed in late 2021, these multi-year contracts are another step in the development of a strong and diverse local supply chain and underpin Saab’s successful delivery of JP2060-3.
